SELECTIVE DESTRUCTION OF CELLS CARRYING LATENT VIRUSES (e.g. HIV)
Several chronic viral diseases (e.g. labial and genital herpes, Kaposi's sarcoma, AIDS) are incurable, because herpes viruses and HIV establish lifelong latent infection in the immune and other cells of the body. Although antiviral drugs available inhibit the replication of these viruses in some extent, but viruses become resistant to the drugs and continuously emerge from the reservoir of carrier cells, finally patients die. This moment there is no available method to destroy virus carrier cells selectively, because they do not express any specific surface molecules, which could be targeted. Conventional gene therapy also failed because it is not specific for virus carrier cells and destroys normal cells either creating more harm to the organism. We established a new method of gene therapy to selectively and specifically destroy cells carrying latent viruses.
