KPS
Biotechnology Ltd.
The Molecular Treatment Solutions Company
Our vision is that cure of major
human diseases will be achieved through detailed
understanding of cell and molecular biology.
Our mission is to discover, develop,
manufacture or provide laboratory support to novel
molecular therapeutic approaches including molecularly
targeted drugs, in particular drugs targeting the
apoptotic pathways, cell-based therapies and gene
therapies. Our company develops new approaches of
all these three type of therapies originated from
the know-how developed during the founders' academic
background.
Our services include contract-based
activities for the pharmaceutical or biotech sector
and clinical research organizations, too. These
cover a wide range of compound screening in ex vivo
kinase assays and in vitro cellular assays to study
the effects (apoptosis, cell cycle inhibition) of
drug candidates, novel cell and gene therapies in
HTRS format. Studies can also be conducted to discover
more details of molecular biological mechanisms
of novel therapies and to provide preclinical rational
for combinations with existing therapies. We also
construct expression vectors and produce recombinant
proteins of target molecules. In support of clinical
trials, we develop special diagnostic assays for
patient selection based on the presence of target
protein, monitor the in vivo biological efficacy
of the treatment directly or via a surrogate marker
and we also provide analytic measurements of drugs
for pharmacokinetic studies.
Our people: founding executives
of the company are Richard Schwab M.D. and Istvan
Petak M.D., Ph.D - two biomedical researchers from
Semmelweis University. The CEO, Dr. Richard Schwab
has long experience in translational research with
a strong medical background. He spent several years
at the Universities of Basel, Vienna, and London
and has taken active part in the development of
a novel molecularly targeted drug candidate, TT-232
currently undergoing phase II clinical trial and
is co-inventor of follow-up compounds. The CSO,
Dr. Istvan Petak conducted research for almost five
years as a Fulbright fellow in St. Jude Children's
Research Hospital, USA at the Molecular Pharmacology
an Molecular Therapeutics departments. Besides the
medical degree, he has PhD in experimental oncology.
His special interest is the development of novel
therapeutic approaches based on his basic research
of death receptor-ligand biology. The results of
his studies have been published in the leading scientific
journals of cancer research (Cancer Research, Clinical
Cancer Research) and basic biology of apoptosis
(Cell Death and Differentiation). Dr. Petak's studies
contributed fundamentally to the molecular rational
of a novel therapeutic protocol targeting the death
receptor mediated apoptotic pathways to treat colon
carcinoma now in clinical trials. In other studies,
he identified the death ligand TRAIL as possible
treatment of drug resistant pediatric sarcomas.
