Background
The establishment of BIOPOLISZ Ltd. was preceded by several years of
efforts that focused on the identification and satisfaction of emerging
innovation needs. The foundation of Szeged-BIOPOLISZ Life Science
Consortium may be regarded as the successful realization of the BIOPOLISZ-
concept. Its founders, Bay Zoltán Applied Research Foundation Institute of
Biotechnology, Cereal Research Non-profit Company, Biological Research
Center of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (HAS), Szeged Committee of the
Hungarian Academy of Sciences, University of Szeged, Local Government of
Szeged and the MP of Szeged's Újszeged District established the Consortium
in 2003 with the view of promoting the activities of Szeged's institutes
related to education, research and innovation both in the city and in the
region, forwarding professional cooperation, coordinating major investment
projects and infrastructural development, providing background for
successful grant-related activities both at a national and international
level and support initiatives aiming to develop Szeged's high-tech
industry. The founding papers of the Consortium have become the founders'
warranty of intent to make joint efforts in the above issues.
In order to make their collaboration and work more effective, the members
of the Consortium agreed to establish and jointly operate a professional
technology transfer office, as a result of which the Biological Research
Center of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the University of Szeged, the
Local Government of Szeged and Duna-Tisza Regional Development Co. Ltd.
signed a syndicate agreement that led to the establishment of our company.
Our objectives
For the best possible implementation of our mission carrying out a complex
system of tasks is indispensable. The first set of tasks includes taking
steps that serve the development of a strong portfolio of intellectual
property and the promotion of a sound general picture of academic-economic
relations, particularly
(i) screening, monitoring and evaluating inventions, creating a searchable
database from the compiled information and taking the necessary steps to
obtain legal protection;
(ii) providing information for researchers, inventors as well as industrial
players and
(iii) offering consultancy on calls for proposals and preparing business
plans.
Our company's other set of tasks is based on the above-described issues and
aims to produce financial profit out of the sale of inventions. These tasks
include the following:
(i) creating spin-out companies for the exploitation of the protected
intellectual property
(ii) making available technology for licensing, patent transfer and
(iii) assisting activities related to the transfer of technology.
Furthermore, we serve the innovation cycle by performing the following set
of tasks:
(i) regular assessing and updating industrial needs and forwarding them to
the required areas by implementing the so-called Industrial Liaison Program
(ILP) that includes the following elements:
-assessing the infrastructure of research instruments, creating a
searchable database out of this information and targeting research
capacity;
-elaborating research agreements;
-monitoring the technology needs, interests and objectives of the industry
and forwarding these data to the appropriate research teams;
-monitoring and forwarding emerging technologies and achievements in
selected fields of science and technology;
-organizing seminars to introduce industrial players to the latest research
results;
-coordinating researcher visits to industrial partners.
(ii) developing strategic networks, establishing and maintaining relations
with the professional sphere both at the national and international level.
BIOPOLISZ Ltd. offers services related to the management of intellectual
